Georgetown Baseball Smashes Connecticut in Game One of Doubleheader, 10-1, Loses Game Two, 4-1

April 28, 2007

Box Score

Washington, D.C. - The Georgetown University baseball team (15-28, 4-13 BE) smashed the Connecticut Huskies (21-22, 6-11 BE) in game one of a BIG EST doubleheader on Saturday afternoon, 10-1. However, the Huskies silenced the Hoya bats in the second game, taking it by a score of 4-1. In the opener, Georgetown smashed three home runs and hit double digits for the second game in a row, while freshman starter Tim Adleman (Raleigh, N.C./Wakefield) was brilliant on the mound, throwing a complete game five-hitter.

In the first game, Georgetown used two home runs in the third to jump in front of the Huskies, 5-0. After consecutive singles by senior Mark McLaughlin (Walnut Creek, Calif./De La Salle) and senior Derek deGrijs (Nashville, Tenn./Goodpasture), junior Matthew Bouchard (East Greenwich, R.I./Bishop Hendricken) slammed a three-run bomb to left center, tying him for the team lead with five dingers on the season.

The next batter was junior Matt Iannetta (Providence, R.I./St. Raphael Academy) and he singled through the left side of the infield to get on base. With two outs, senior Joseph Graziano (Floral Park, N.Y./Chaminade) hit his third home run of the season to left to put the Hoyas up by five runs. It was the third home run for Graziano in only his 39th at bat this season, as his 2007 season had been marred thus far by unfortunate injuries. Over the span of the last two games, Georgetown had scored their last 10 runs via the long-ball.

Tim Adleman was outstanding on the mound for the Blue and Gray as he threw a five-hit complete game, allowing only one run and striking out four Connecticut batters. The win was Adleman's third of the season and his first nine-inning complete game of the year (he threw an eight-inning complete game in a loss to Seton Hall on April 5).

The Hoyas would tack on two more runs in the seventh inning to make the score, 7-1. After the first three batters of the inning reached base safely, Bouchard delivered a sacrifice fly to center, his fourth RBI of the day. With two outs, Iannetta came through with a single to center that scored McLaughlin with the second run of the frame.

Georgetown continued to tack on runs with three more coming home in the eighth. After Graziano doubled down the leftfield line to lead-off the inning, the next two batters went down in order before freshman Tom Elliott (Blue Bell, Pa./St. Joseph's Prep) knocked a RBI single up the middle. The next batter was McLaughlin and he smashed Georgetown's third home run of the game, a two-run shot to right center to push GU to double digits. The homer was McLaughlin's third of the season and Georgetown's fifth in the last two games.

After not scoring 10 or more runs in a game since March 13th, this marked the second straight game in which the Hoyas had hit that mark.

In the second game, Georgetown broke into the scoring column in the third inning, and took a 1-0 lead. Graziano walked to lead-off the inning and then moved to second after a line-drive by Brandon Davis (Poway, Calif./The Bishop's School) was snagged for the first out and then promptly thrown away by Connecticut's third baseman. With two outs, McLaughlin singled to left but Graziano was held at third base and the Huskies thought they had saved the run from scoring, but ultimately it just prolonged the inevitable. An infield single by deGrijs followed and Graziano was home with GU's first, and only, run of the game.

Starter Michael Gaggioli (Mission Viejo, Calif./Santa Margarita Catholic) took the loss and fell to 2-4 on the season. Gaggioli pitched seven innings and only allowed three runs on nine hits while striking out four.

The third and decisive game of this BIG EAST series will be played at noon tomorrow, Sunday, April 29.
