Georgetown Baseball Drops 12-4 Decision to Mt. St. Mary's

Bethesda, Md, - Ryan Craft (Jupiter, Fla./The Benjamin School) had three hits but the visiting Mt. St. Mary's University baseball team turned a 3-2 deficit into an 8-3 lead with a six run fifth inning en route to a 12-4 victory over Georgetown Tuesday night at Shirley Povich Field. The Mount improves to 14-17 while Georgetown falls to 17-20.

Craft finished 3-5 for the Hoyas and senior outfielder Timmy Jones (Ledgewood, N.J./Morristown) went 2-4 with two runs scored.

The Mount's Dustin Pease tossed 4.2 innings out of the bullpen to up his record to 6-4. Joseph Hayes went 3-3 with three runs scored while Mike Gioioso, Joe Kotula, Josh Vittek and Matt Eiden all collected two hits for the Mountaineers.

In The Mount half of the fifth, MSM turned a 3-2 deficit into an 8-3 lead as the first seven batters of the frame reached. A leadoff single by Mike Gioioso came before Matt Trusch reached on an error. Josh Vittek then drilled his fourth homer of the season deep over the left centerfield fence to give Mt. St. Mary's a 5-3 lead. Stephan Fay was then hit by a pitch ahead of Joe Kotula's RBI triple. Joseph Hayes followed with a RBI single before Matt Eiden ripped a RBI single of his own. Mark Dutmers (Sarasota, Fla./Riverview) relieved Georgetown starter Grady McConnell (Capistrano, Calif,/Capistrano Valley) and retired three of the four batters he faced but the Mountainieers pushed across six runs on five hits and took advantage of two GU errors for an 8-3 lead.

Georgetown jumped out to an early 2-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning on a RBI single by Jones and an RBI groundout by Brandon Davis (Poway, Calif./The Bishop's School). The teams traded unearned runs in the second inning and The Mount got closer, 3-2 in the fourth on Matt Staso's sacrifice fly.
 

 

The Hoyas sliced their deficit to 8-4 with a run of their own on the fifth. Mark McLaughlin (Walnut Creek, Calif./De La Salle) walked to lead off the inning before Jones reached on a fielder's choice. Craft then hammered a ball into leftfield and Jones hustled home all the way from first.

Dutmers struck out two Mount batters in two innings while Kevin Lundquist (Oley, Pa./The Hill School) allowed just one earned run in the final three frames.

Georgetown and Mt. St. Mary's split the season two games.

Georgetown gets right back to the diamond on Wednesday, April 19 when GU hosts George Washington at Shirley Povich Field in a 7 p.m. contest.
