Hoyas Win MAISA War Memorial for the First Time in Program History

Oct. 30, 2006

Washington, D.C. - For the first time in program history, the Georgetown sailing team won the War Memorial Regatta, the MAISA conference coed championship, this weekend at the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy in Kings Point, N.Y. The Hoyas and the other 19 schools battled excessive winds all weekend, which shortened the regatta to only three races.

On Saturday, with the winds reaching up to 45 knots, Georgetown overcame the conditions to score 26 points over the three A and B division races. Juniors Chris Behm () and Zach Kavanaugh () were fourth in the A division with 14 points, trailing Old Dominion (9), N.Y. Maritime (12) and Hobart/William Smith (12). In the B division, the Hoyas were third with 12 points, behind the efforts of senior captain JB Turney (), and sophomore Carly Chamberlain () in race 1 and 2 and classmate Sprague Brodie () in the final race. Kings Point had nine points to top the division, while Penn was one point ahead of the Hoyas in second.

Sunday competition ended up being cancelled late in the day due to the high winds, giving the Hoyas their first conference coed championship. Georgetown ended up tied with Hobart/William Smith with 26 points, but won the tiebreaker to take home the title.

The top-seven finishers advance to the coed Atlantic Coast Championship on November 11-12 in Kings Point.

This weekend, the Hoyas have another light schedule, taking part in only the MAISA Women's Championship, hosted by Cornell University.
