Georgetown Sailing Takes Part in Four Events This Weekend

Washington, D.C. - The Georgetown University sailing program was spread among four regattas this weekend. The Hoyas posted fourth place finishes at the Robert Paul Arrigan Memorial Regatta and the Brad Dellenbaugh Women's Trophy, while placing seventh for the Admiral's Cup and 12th for the Moody Trophy. Georgetown hosted the Arrigan Memorial Regatta coming in fourth among 16 schools with a total of 103 points. St. Mary's won the event with 87 points, followed by Navy (99) and Penn (100). The Hoyas were first in the `A' division with 43 points behind the sailing of senior Kyle Bergeron (Wellesley, Mass./Belmont Hill) and sophomore Liz Rapp (Lancaster, Pa./Manheim Township). The pair was among the top-five in 10 of the 11 races, winning two of them. In the `B' division, senior Berry Kurland (Sharon, Conn./The Hotchkiss School) and junior Theresa Salerno (Manasquan, N.J./Manasquan) were fifth with 60 points, winning one race and finishing among the top-five in seven. At the Dellenbaugh Women's Trophy, hosted by Brown University, Georgetown was fourth in the field of 16 schools with 207 points. Charleston won the regatta with 109 points, followed by Navy (135) and Yale (204). A strong finish in the `B' division propelled the Hoyas to their finish. In the `B' division, seniors Derby Anderson (Annapolis, Md./The Key School) and Jackie Schmitz (McLean, Va./Holton-Arms) were fourth with 84 points, among the top-six in 11 of the 15 races and winning two. In the `A' division, Georgetown was 10th with 123 points.
In the race for the Admiral's Cup in Kings Point, N.Y., the Hoyas fell short, placing seventh among 18 with 402 points. Hobart/William Smith won the Cup with 300 points, easily sailing past St. Mary's (363), Harvard (369) and host Kings Point (373), who were in a tight battle for second. Georgetown's first place finish in the `A' division highlighted the Hoyas performance. Senior Andrew Campbell (San Diego, Calif./The Bishop's School) and junior Caroline LaMotte (Oxford, Md./The Hotchkiss School) combined for 97 points, four better than second place Darmouth. The pair won four and crossed among the top-five in 12 of the 17 races. Georgetown was also eighth in the `B' division with 151 points and 11th in the `C' division with 154. In the final race of the weekend, the Hoyas were 12th of 18 schools at The Moody Trophy, hosted by the University of Rhode Island. Highlighting the performance was a third place showing in the `B' division, as sophomore Zach Kavanaugh (Dartmouth, Mass./Dartmouth) and the combination of freshmen Madeline Maguire (Amherst, Mass./Amherst) and Sprague Brodie (Duxbury, Mass./Milton Academy) totaled 87 points with top-five finishes in 8 of the 13 races, including two wins. The Hoyas tied for 15th in the `A' division with 155 points. Georgetown is back in the water on Saturday and Sunday for the MAISA Open and Women's Championships, along with the Thompson Trophy. |
