Megan Helsen: Helsen Finds Mr. Wright

One might think that after being a part of Grand Valley's 2005 National Championship Volleyball Team, posting a .258 hitting percentage, being a member of the Daktronics Great Lakes Region Second Team and the All-GLIAC Second Team, that senior Megan Helsen's first love would be volleyball. But on July 5, 2005 this changed when she announced her engagement to Paul Wright.

"I almost ruined it," Helsen chuckled. "He took me out to a really nice dinner and then we went to the beach to watch the sunset. Paul had a spot picked out where he wanted to pop the question, but it required we walk along the shore. It was really cold and I just wanted to sit down and stay bundled up. But he kept begging me to walk with him, so I figured something was up and I went."

Paul ended up being able to ask Megan at his "special spot," despite her stubbornness.

Megan and Paul have dated since her junior and his sophomore years of high school.

"We've known each other practically our entire lives," Megan said. "We even went to preschool together and we both want to become math teachers. We're pretty much a perfect fit. We really compliment each other well; I'm completely comfortable when I'm with him."

No wedding date has been set yet because Helsen wants to finish school and volleyball before she begins planning a wedding. Megan is hoping to save money for a ceremony some time in the summer of 2008.

"We have so many common dreams and he treats me the way that a girl wants to be treated. He'd do anything for me, and I'd do anything for him," she smiled. "He's the only serious relationship that I've had, but I know it's right because I can't see myself with anyone else."

Helsen looks forward to another successful volleyball season at Grand Valley with her fiancé cheering her on in the stands.

"I'm going to miss volleyball and my girls, but it will be really nice to have Paul and a wedding to distract me," Megan confessed.

Helsen feels lucky to play a sport she loves and be with a man she loves even more. As her friends joke, she has found her "Mr. Wright."
