Allendale, Mich. - Grand Valley State won three events at the Hillsdale Gina Relays, one of the biggest outdoor track meets in the Midwest, and posted 10 NCAA qualifying times. Natalie Ewing shattered the school record in the 5K with a time of 16:41.50, breaking the old mark by 37.9 seconds tp qualify for the NCAA meet. Alex Baker set a new school record and qualified for Nationals in the 400 hurdles with a time of 1:01.34, breaking her own mark from last year.
Stephanie Kuhlman won the 400 meters in a time of 55.41 and Ashley Thomas finished right behind in 56.28, with both times meeting the provisional standard. Megan Doerr was the final individual winner for the Lakers in the 3K steeplechase with a time of 11:05.42 and Leanne Budde placed second in 11:08.59, with both times qualifying for NCAA's. The 4 x 400 relay squad earned the final Grand Valley victory with a qualifying time of 3:48.47.
Following Ewing in the 5K with NCAA qualifying marks were three other Lakers. Krista O'Dell placed third (17:11.26), Shannon Antvelink in seventh (17:25.41), and Jennette Seckinger in tenth (17:36.38) all hit the NCAA qualifying time in the event.
GVSU will compete in the GLIAC Championships this weekend (May 2-3) at Saginaw Valley State. The Lakers are looking for their eighth straight conference title, as they have won every indoor and outdoor track & field GLIAC title since 2000.
