Grand Valley State swept Cornerstone University in a non-conference doubleheader Monday. The Lakers won game one, 4-1, and game two, 4-3. GVSU improves to 12-16 overall, while Cornerstone falls to 14-7-1. Grand Valley will travel to Gannon University for a GLIAC doubleheader on Friday, April 15 at 3:00 p.m. and a doubleheader at Mercyhurst College on Saturday, April 16 at 1:00 p.m.
Grand Valley scored first in game one, posting one run in the top of the fifth. Junior center fielder Tara Marsh reached second base with a one out error by the second baseman. She scored as senior shortstop Sarah Paape reached base on an error by the third baseman.
Cornerstone tied up the game with a run in the bottom of the sixth inning, but GVSU added three runs off of three hits and a Cornerstone error in the top of the seventh inning to pick up the 4-1 win.
Junior catcher Megan Smith started off the seventh inning with a single to right field and advanced on a sacrifice hit by junior pinch hitter Stacie DelChiaro. Marsh singled up the middle, advancing the runner to third base and she scored as Paape reached base for the second time in the game on an error. With two outs in the inning, freshman designated player Elizabeth Smith singled down the left field line two bring in the final two runs.
Marsh recorded two hits for the Lakers and Elizabeth Smith went 2-for-4 with two RBI. Junior Kristin Jenner (6-2) pitched all seven innings, allowing four hits, one earned run, five walks, while striking out eight batters.

The Lakers added three more runs in the fifth inning to seal the 4-3 win. Marsh walked with one out and advanced to third as Paape reached second base on another Cornerstone error. Buresh walked to load the bases and the first run scored as Ireton reached on a fielder's choice. Freshman pinch hitter Brittany Hay singled through the left side to score the second run and the final run was brought in as freshman second baseman Kristin Moleski reached on an error.
Buresh was 3-for-3 with two runs scored, while Ireton was 1-for-4 with a run scored and a RBI. Freshman Stephanie Cole pitched the first four innings, allowing three hits, three runs, and three walks, while striking out four. Allison Crews finished the game, throwing the final 3.0 innings, giving up just two hits.
The Golden Eagles recorded eight errors in the doubleheader, while the Lakers were perfect in the field. GVSU out hit Cornerstone 12-9.
