Grand Valley State's women's golf team claimed its first ever NCAA Division II East Regional on Tuesday at the Meadows Golf Course in Allendale, Mich. The Lakers were tied for second going into day two and shot a 306 in the third round to pick up the win. GVSU tallied a three round score of 959, seven strokes ahead of second place Ferris State.
Senior Melissa Sneller won the individual medalist honors, shooting a 234 in three rounds. She was tied for second place after posting a 79 and 80 in the first two rounds and shot a 75 in the third round to claim the title.
Junior Laura Leatherman tied for third place overall after tallying a 238 (84, 79, 75), while junior Enid Gage tied for fifth place with a 239 (81, 79, 79). Sophomore Kate MacDonald placed 11th with a 246 (80, 84, 82) and junior Kristi Vienneau tied for 13th place after shooting a 249 (85, 87, 77).
Grand Valley is making its fourth trip in five years to the NCAA Division II National Championships. The tournament will be played May 11-14 at the Championship Course at University of New Mexico in Albuquerque, New Mexico.
Last season, the Lakers finished sixth in the nation, while in 2004 they were fourth. In 2001-02, GVSU was fifth and in 1999-00, the Lakers were sixth.
