Grand Valley State had a split squad last weekend, sending some student-athletes to the St. Valentine Invite hosted by Boston University, while the Lakers host the GVSU Open. Between the two meets, GVSU's men earned 11 NCAA Provisional marks. The Lakers will return to action as they host the Grand Rapids Championship on Friday, Feb. 17 at 4:00 p.m.
At the GVSU Open, sophomore Dan Jackson set a school record in the 55 meter hurdles with a first place time of 7.50, while sophomore Garron Lucius finished second in 7.63. Both were NCAA Provisional times. Freshman Bryant Wilson recorded a provisional mark in the pole vault with a first place finish of 16-01.00.
Four Lakers posted qualifying marks in the weight throw. Junior Charles Smith finished third with a throw of 60-05.00 and junior Nick Natale took fourth (57-05.00). Junior Casey Fechter placed fifth with a mark of 56-01.25, while junior Kevin Kimpel threw 55-01.50 for a seventh place finish.
At the St. Valentine Invite, sophomore Nate Peck finished second place in the 5,000 meter run, setting a school record and an NCAA Provisional time of 14:07.29. Sophomore Grant Fall placed 14th, running a 14:38.41. Junior Bryan Boeve broke a school record in the 800, finishing 10th with a time of 1:51.59. Freshman Jake Hendrickson placed 11th in the 200 meter dash (21.94).

"We have a few more areas we need to make improvements in and then we should be ready for the GLIAC Championships at Findlay," added Baltes.
