Ashland, Ohio - Grand Valley State used a stellar day in the water to move back into second place at the 2007 GLIAC Swimming & Diving Championships with a three-day total of 429.50 points. Wayne State leads the way with 614 points. The fourth and final day will begin with prelims Saturday (Feb. 24) morning in Ashland, Ohio.
GVSU used three events in which four individuals scored points. Justin Vasquez led the way in the 100 butterfly with a fifth-place finish in a time of 51.80. That time also met the NCAA B cut. Kyle Barrons finished 10th (52.69), Phil Watkins 11th (52.92) and Ben Jylkka 13th (53.74). GVSU scored 30.5 team points in the 100 butterfly. The Lakers also scored four individuals in the 200 freestyle. Matt Witkowski finished fifth in the 200 free, touching the wasll in 1:43.74. Dan Kimble touched in 11th place (1:46.02), Kyle Burgher in 12th (1:46.04) and Aaron Phillippe 13th (1:47.17). Grand Valley State tallied 59 teams points in the men's 1-meter diving event. Joel Overway finished second (380.20), followed by Ryan Smith in third (370.35), Scott Klaasen in fifth (343.35) and Evan Betts in seventh (329.75).
Justin Barkel nearly met the NCAA A standard with his second-place finish in the 100 breaststroke (57.97). Collin Perry finished 13th in the 100 breast (1:03.69). Ross Perry finished sixth in the 400 IM (4:17.89), while Collin Perry was 10th (4:24.11). Ryan Whitsitt finished 10th in the 100 backstroke (54.19), followed by Paul Tansey in 13th (55.47). The 800 freestyle relay team of Justin Vasquez, Justin Barkel, Dan Kimble and Matt Witkowski touched in third-place (6:56.21).
