Grand Valley State has 10 baseball players earn All-GLIAC honors, including senior Matt Rafeld who was named the GLIAC Pitcher of the Year. The Lakers tallied a 23-7 GLIAC record and won their second consecutive conference championship title.
Rafeld, a two-time First-Team All-GLIAC selection, is 9-2 with a 3.08 ERA during his final campaign for the Lakers. Rafeld has won seven straight decisions for the Lakers, including five complete games and two shutouts. Matt ranks first in the GLIAC in strikeouts (75) and walks allowed (10). His 7.5-1.0 strikeout-to-walk ratio also ranked tops among GLIAC hurlers. During his 7-0 stretch the last third of the season, Rafeld owns a 1.59 ERA in 51.0 innings pitched. The Ashland, Ohio native has yielded just nine earned runs with 51 strikeouts and only three walks during that stretch. Rafeld, who is 17-3 in his career for GVSU, is key figure in a Lakers' pitching staff that ranks first in the GLIAC with a team ERA of 3.85.
Earning All-GLIAC First Team honors were Rafeld, Scott Smith (2B), Ryan Lyster (SS), Brandon McFarland (OF), Jon Micoff (SP), and Joe Finnerty (RP). All-GLIAC Second Team honorees were first baseman Tim Hudnall and outfielder Scott Allen. Catcher Elijah Beckwith and outfielder Joe Mertes were named to the All-GLIAC Honorable Mention team.
