Women's Tennis Kicks off Play at Cougar Classic

PULLMAN, Wash. -The Gonzaga University women's tennis team opened the fall season Friday at the Cougar Classic hosted by the Washington State University Cougars. In the No. 1 singles senior Angela Fry beat Montana's Annabelle Janairo in the first round, def. She then was defeated by the University of Idaho's Jessica Hubbard in the quarterfinals, 2-6, 6-1, 6-4. Also in the No. 1 singles freshman Amanda Becker recorded her first collegiate victory over Montana State University's Ivette Duran, 6-0, 2-6, 6-1. Becker was then defeated in the quarterfinals by Washington State's Amy Toth, 6-4, 6-3. The Bulldogs only loss in the first round of No. 1 singles was junior Kendall Bates who was defeated by Vasileva, def. Playing in No. 2 singles freshman Erin Humphrey recorded a first round win over Montana State's Tiffany Thomas, 6-4, 6-1. She was defeated in the quarterfinals by Idaho's Kareen Konishi, 7-5, 6-3. Senior Sirrah Williams, and freshman Sydney Lederhouse both were defeated in the first round of No. 2 singles play on Friday, but bounced back with wins in backdraw matches. Williams defeated Eastern Washington's Sayaka Yoshimoto, 6-2, 6-1 and Lederhouse defeated Montana's Colby Fannin 7-5, 7-6. Rain caused five matches to be played in Lewiston, Idaho and postponed doubles play until Saturday.
