Women's Tennis Drops Two Easter Weekend Matches

The Gonzaga University women's tennis team dropped its first two matches of an Easter Weekend trip falling to Sonoma State, 4-3, on Friday and Pacific, 5-2, on Saturday. Gonzaga will face Sacramento State on Sunday to wrap up its trip to the Bay Area.

On Friday, Gonzaga and Sonoma State split the singles matches with each school winning three. Jamie Buterbaugh won at number one singles with a 7-5, 6-2 win over Michelle Jovez. Katie Sanders would pick up a point with a two-set win at number four singles while Connie Head needed three sets to defeat Deah Toby at number six singles, 2-6, 6-2, 7-5. While Gonzaga and Sonoma State split the singles competition, SSU was able to win the match by virtue of winning two of three doubles points. Sirrah Williams and Aaryn Volkmann won for Gonzaga while Deah Toby and Julie Fisher won for SSU. The match came down to a tie-breaker point in the number oen doubles. The team of Michelle Jovez and Kelly Murphy was able to defeat Gonzaga's doubles pair of Jamie Buterbaugh and Taio Miller in a 7-5 tie-breaker to win the point 9-8.

On Saturday a short-handed Pacific team was able to defeat a Gonzaga 5-2. Katie Sanders won her second match of the weekend playing in the number five singles spot. Sanders defeated Lisa Lester, 6-3, 7-6. Katie Rock won Gonzaga's other point with a default win over Pacific in the number six singles spot. Jamie Buterbaugh playing in the number one singles spot was defeated by Susanne Bertel, 6-1, 6-1. Bertel is currently ranked the #67 singles player in the NCAA. Gonzaga had a chance for a third point during doubles competition as the pair of Taio Miller and Aaryn Volkmann almost knocked off Melinda Kocsis and Lisa Lester in the number two doubles match, losing 9-8. Gonzaga won the final doubles match by default.
