Box Score

NASHVILLE, Tenn. - - The Gonzaga University women's soccer team won its third straight match Sunday, as the Bulldogs up-ended the University of Alabama-Birmingham 2-1 during the final day of the Vanderbilt University Tournament in Nashville, Tenn. With the victory, the Zags won the four-team tournament as they also defeated host Vanderbilt 2-0 on Friday.

The Bulldogs improved to 4-2-0 with the victory while the Blazers, a NCAA Tournament team in 2006, suffered their first loss of the season, falling to 4-1-1.

UAB jumped out to an early 1-0 edge when Sally Palmer scored during the 13th minute. Palmer connected with a pass from Allysha Chapman from 14 yards out before firing the ball past Gonzaga goalkeeper Jessie Thalman's finger tips.

The score remained unchanged until the Bulldogs' Lauren Dascenzo knotted the score 1-1 at the 60:02 mark. Dascenzo knocked the ball in on the right side just past UAB's goalkeeper, Kate Blankenship. Sarah Hall and Lauren Zuckerman earned assists on the goal.

Freshman Ashley Riley scored her second goal of the tournament during the 83rd minute to give Gonzaga the 2-1 victory. Riley, who hadn't scored a goal all year until Friday, fired the game-winner from 10 yards out on the left side. For her efforts on the weekend, Riley was named Most Valuable Player of the tournament.

Thalman earned her fourth victory of the season as she posted three saves. Blankenship posted one save en route to the loss.

Gonzaga earned the victory, despite being out-shot by the Blazers 12-10. UAB also held a 2-1 corner kick advantage.

The Bulldogs will return to action this weekend when they host Utah State University Friday at 3 p.m. at Martin Field.
