SPOKANE, Wash. - Mike McCarthy and Justin Neerhof both turned away several scoring opportunities in overtime as Gonzaga (6-3-2, 1-0-1 WCC) and No. 14 San Diego (7-2-1, 0-1-1 WCC) played to a 1-1 tie in West Coast Conference soccer action Friday afternoon at Martin Field.

Tryggvi Bjornsson put the Zags on the board in the first period as he drove a ball into the upper right corner during the 11th minute. Bjornsson connected on the shot following a header attempt by Connor Quinn.

San Diego knotted the game at 1-1 in the 73rd minute as Tyler Conley's shot through traffic found the back of the net. Sy Reeves served the ball into the goal box following an indirect kick.

Both teams had scoring opportunities in overtime but San Diego goalkeeper Neerhof turned away three shots in overtime while Zags' goalkeeper McCarthy stopped a point blank shot by Kellen Hiroto. Gonzaga's Taylor McCool just missed ending the game during the fourth minute of the first overtime but his rebound shot off a corner kick sailed just over the cross bar.

In a match marred by seven yellow cards Neerhoff ended the match with nine saves while McCarthy tallied eight. Gonzaga hosts No. 17 Loyola Marymount on Sunday afternoon in the Zags final home match of the 2001 season. San Diego stays in the Northwest for a Sunday match at Portland.
