Bulldogs Strike Early For Men's Soccer Victory
Sept. 24, 2000 SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. - Justin Franson, Jason Kuska and Scott Yuska all scored first-half goals as Gonzaga University defeated Cal Poly 4-1 in a non-conference men's soccer match Sunday. For the fourth straight weekend the Bulldogs lost the first match of a road trip and came back to earn a weekend split in evening their record at 4-4. Gonzaga lost to the University of California-Irvine 1-0 on Saturday. After eight straight maches away from home to open the regular season, the Bulldogs will make their Martin Field regular-season debut Friday against Western Washington University. Franson didn't waste any time in getting Gonzaga on the scoreboard Sunday, teaming with Abbas Faridnia for a 1-0 lead at 15:16. Kuska scored hist first of two goals on the day at 28:22 on an assist from Connor Quinn. Yuska's penalty kick at 35:52 sent the Bulldogs to the lockerroom with a 3-0 halftime lead. The Mustangs (2-5-1) tried to get back into the match at 58:18 when Cory Pasek ruined Mike McCarthy's shutout bid. But Kuska and Faridnia teamed up at 65:24 for a 4-1 Gonzaga lead. Gonzaga held a 12-7 shots advantage. McCarthy had 2 saves, while Cal Poly's Brenton Junge was called on for 5 saves.
