Men's Soccer Falls In Overtime To No. 7 Cal State-Fullerton
Sept. 15, 2000 LOS ANGELES - Brent Whitfield scored 22-minutes into overtime Friday afternoon as No. 7 Cal State-Fullerton slipped by Gonzaga, 4-3, in the opening round of the Fila Classic played at Sullivan Field on the campus of Loyola Marymount University. The Titans opened up a 2-0 advantage in the opening half as Duncan Oughton scored a pair of goals, the first coming on a header at the 9:35 mark. Oughton's second tally came on a hard shot from deep inside the goal box at the 34:29. Gonzaga closed the gap to one goal just minutes before halftime as Scott Bertram sent home a flick pass from Brian Ching. The Bulldogs tied and then took the lead in the game during a four-minute span midway through the second half. Freshman Scott Yuska scored on a deflection off the keeper to knot the game at 2-2 at the 62:56 mark. Brian Ching then drove home what the Zags was the game winner four-minutes later. Cal State-Fullerton battled back to tie the game at 3-3 when Hector Orellana scored with a hard spinning shot that found the upper left-hand corner of the net in the 70th minute. On the play Titans midfielder Ricky Melendez collected his third assist of the game. That goal set up the opportunity for Whitfield to be a hero for the Titans. Gonzaga drops to 2-3-0 on the season while Cal State-Fullerton improves to 5-0-0. The Bulldogs return to action on Sunday afternoon when they battle Michigan State University.
