PORTLAND, Ore. - Gonzaga University's men's soccer team opened the regular season Saturday with a 3-0 defeat to sixth-ranked Stanford University at the University of Portland Classic.

The Cardinal, a NCAA Tournament quarterfinalist a year ago and ranked sixth in the National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) pre-season poll, got on the scoreboard at 1:53 when Matt Moses dribbled to the endline and slipped the ball under Gonzaga keeper Mike McCarthy for a 1-0 halftime lead.

Stanford increased its lead to 2-0 early in the second half when Derek Shanahan put a header past McCarthy off a pinpoint cross from Moses. Roger Leveque scored the final goal at 73:38 with a chip shot over McCarthy.

Gonzaga, with just one first-half shot, was out-shot 12-5. Stanford keeper Andrew Terris, who played the first 77:49, made both Cardinal saves in the match. McCarthy, making his 11th straight start over the past two seasons, had five saves.

Gonzaga will face Denver University at noon Monday.
