RICHLAND, Wash. - The Gonzaga University men's and women's golf teams opened the 2004 Spring Season at the Inland Collegiate Tournament played at Horn Rapids Golf Course in Richland, Wash. The women placed third in the five-team field while the men's team was fourth among four teams in the one day competition. The Inland Collegiate consists of the four Division I schools in the Inland Northwest (Gonzaga, Eastern Washington University, University of Idaho, Washington State University) and Lewis-Clark State College and is held annually to open the spring golf season.

Freshman Mary Kate Morgan was the top Gonzaga women's golfer as she fired a two-over par 74 to tie for second in a field of 30 golfers. Washington State's Jay Lee Longbottom claimed individual honors with an even-par 72 while the Cougars Kim Welch tied Morgan for second place honors. Washington State won the team title with a score of 306 followed by Idaho at 316 and Gonzaga at 318. Eastern Washington and L-C State rounded out the women's side.

Carrie DeGree also claimed Top 10 honors with a round of 77 which tied her for sixth place with Jenna Huff of Idaho. Jennifer Swanson shot a round of 82 and Kelsey Posedel carded an 85 to account for the Zags four scoring golfers.

On the men's side Washington State edged Idaho by one stroke to take team honors wiht a score of 291. Idaho finished second at 292 followed by L-C State at 312 and Gonzaga with a total of 314. Eastern Washington no longer fields a men's team for the competition. Matt Munroe narrowly missed the Top 10 as he finished in a three way tie for 11th with a round of four-over 76. Ryan Camp of Washington State won the event with a four-under 68.

Souta Nozaka was the second best GU golfer on the day with a round of 77 followed by Stu Bell at 78. John Bergren and Ryan Fritz each shot an 80 to round out the Gonzaga counters.
