Crew Dominates Head Of The Spokane

SPOKANE, Wash. - Gonzaga University crew dominated its first race of the fall as the Bulldogs men's and women's varsity eight won their heats during the Head of the Spokane regatta on Saturday morning. In a staggered racing format for the varsity eight's Gonzaga's men defeated squads from Pacific Lutheran and Washington State. The women's eight won their race against an eight from Pacific Lutheran. The varsity race consisted of two heats of 3,500 meters each with the total times being combined for final results. The first race was a time trial with boats starting side-by-side in two's. The second race was a staggered start with each school starting ahead of the next boat based on it's time from the first race. Gonzaga's varsity men turned in a 7,000 meter time of 20:54. Gonzaga's junior varsity eight finished second with a time fo 22:01. Pacific Lutheran was third at 22:28 and Washington State fourth at 23:27. In the women's varsity event Gonzaga varsity eight turned in a 7,000 meter mark of 23:55. Gonzaga's junior varsity eight was second at 25:22 and Pacific Lutheran third at 26:32. Other racing featured a women's open four over a distance of 3,500 meters. Gonzaga's four won the heat at 13:41 with PLU's first boat crossing the liine in 14:10 and Lutes second boat finishing at 15:16. Gonzaga also raced two women's novice boats and one men's novice boat over the 3,500 meter distance. The women's first novice boat pulled a time of 15:51 with the second boat at 16:46. The novice men's eight completed the course in 13:40. Several boats from the Coeur d'Alene Rowing Club also competed at the 3,500 meters distance. The first two-man boat finished at 13:53 and the second two-man boat was at 14:29. The CDA Rowing Club men's four finished at 14:44 and the boy's four finished at 13:45. The first girl's four finished at 15:42 and the second one crossed the line at 16:06.
