Bulldogs To Row For National Championship

CAMDEN, NJ -Gonzaga University men's crew will row for a national championship on Saturday morning as the Bulldogs Varsity 4+ advanced to the Grand Final at the IRA National Championships on Cooper River in Camden, NJ. Weather plagued Friday's racing schedule as the course had to be drained for flood reasons following heavy rains on the East Coast overnight. When the Bulldogs Varsity 4+ was able to hit the water they were up to the task placing third in their heat race to make the first Grand Final appearance since 1997. Stanford won the Bulldogs heat race with a time of 6:26.90 with Temple coming in second. Gonzaga pulled a time of 6:41.80 and held off fourth place Harvard by six seconds to advance to the Grand Final. Joining the top three crews from Gonzaga's heat race in Saturday's Grand Final are California, Washington State and Hobart. Gonzaga's Freshman 8+ also moved on to the Third Final with a third place showing in their semifinal race on Friday morning. Navy won heat with a time of 6:05.61 followed by Rutgers. Gonzaga was one second behind the Scarlet Knights in third place with a time of 6:09.76. George Washington was fourth giving Gonzaga its second win over the East Coast crew in less than a week.
