Elana Meyers Selected to ESPN The Magazine Academic First Team All-District Softball Team

May 11, 2006

WASHINGTON, DC - The accolades continue to pour in for George Washington University junior shortstop Elana Meyers (Douglasville, GA/Lithia Springs), who on Thursday was voted to the ESPN The Magazine Academic First Team All-District 2 Softball team. The College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) select the Academic All-District and All-America teams for both University (D-I and D-I AA) and College (D-II, D-III and NAIA) Divisions. By virtue of being voted First Team All-District for the University Division, Meyers is now eligible for the Academic All-America ballot.

Meyers, who received a bachelor's degree in Exercise Science in December 2005, was one of four infielders selected to the District 2 All-Academic First Team. A total of 10 student-athletes comprised the first team.

On Wednesday, May 10, Meyers became the first Colonial in softball history to earn Atlantic 10 All-Conference honors. She was one of two First Team All-Conference selections at shortstop and also was selected as the conference's Student-Athlete of the Year as she garnered Academic All-Conference accolades for the second consecutive season as well.

Meyers led the Colonials in 2006 in nearly every major offensive category. She finished as the team leader in batting average (.414), runs (39), hits (65), doubles (13), triples (7), RBI (29), total bases (104), slugging percentage (.662) and stolen bases (22). Meyers started every game at shortstop for the Colonials as they set a record for most victories in a single season with 24.

In the classroom, she is a six-time member of the A-10 Commissioner's Honor Roll, a two-time Arthur Ashe Jr. Softball First Team Sports-Scholar and has been a member of the GW Athletic Department Dean's List every semester. On Monday, May 8 at GW's annual Senior Honors Luncheon, Meyers earned her fourth straight team MVP honor and was presented the SAAC Senior Female Athlete Academic Award.

Meyers is currently in pursuit of a master's degree in Exercise Science in Clinical Exercise Physiology.
