Softball Falls Twice To Massachusetts

April 29, 2007

Box Score

AMHERST, MA - Senior Elana Meyers went 4-6 including a solo home run in game two, but the George Washington Colonials (21-24, 8-10 A-10) dropped their conference doubleheader to Massachusetts (29-12-1, 14-0 A-10) on Sunday afternoon at the UM Softball Complex. GW got a strong performance by freshman Amanda Gabriel in game one, but fell 4-2, while the Minutemen took the second game, 9-1, in five innings.

Massachusetts took a 4-0 lead after three innings but the Colonials fought back scoring one run in the fourth. With one out in the fourth, junior Hilary King doubled to left center and vanced to third on a bunt single by sophomore Tori Sensi. Next, junior Colleen Kegler singled to center to score King. GW stranded two runners in scoring position that inning.

Junior Jackie Yaniga homered to right field to lead off the seventh but that was all the Colonials could get in the inning.

Gabriel pitched another complete game, allowing three earned runs on 10 hits, striking out three in six innings.

The two runs are the most a GW team has ever scored against Massachusetts.

Meyers delivered the only run of the game for the Colonials in game two with her second home run of the season to lead off the fourth.
Junior Lisa Cohen (3-2) got the loss for the Colonials allowing three earned runs on eight hits in 2.2 innings.

GW returns to action on Thursday, May 3 to host Coppin State in a doubleheader. On Saturday, May 5, the Colonials will honor six athletes who will be appearing in their last home game at the Mount Vernon Complex, against Saint Louis for a 1:00 pm doubleheader.
