Women's Lacrosse Loses Second Half Battle, 17-6

April 7, 2003

Box Score

AMHERST, MA - George Washington battled the University of Massachusetts to a 4-4 tie at halftime, but was unable to keep pace with the Minutewomen who scored the first eight goals in the second half, to hand the Colonials a 17-6 Atlantic 10 Conference loss.

GW (5-4, 1-2) and UMass (6-5, 2-1) traded goals and the lead in the first half, as neither team could gain a significant advantage. Jenny Heisler led the charge in the early going for the Colonials, scoring her two goals on the day in the first half. Heidi Mayer and Denna Vezo added a goal each. Vezo's score came with just 27 seconds remaining in the half to knot the match at 4-4.

The Minutewomen took control in the second half, scoring eight unanswered goals over the first 14 minutes of the period and taking 12-4 lead. The Colonials were unable to rally from this deficit, mustering just two additional scores over the balance of the half. Jacqueii Arfaa and Colleen Schmidt would score GW's two second half goals, as the Colonials fell to 1-2 in conference play and 5-4 overall.

The Colonials return to action on Wednesday, April 9, when they travel cross-town to face Howard University in a 3:30 p.m. match.
