Women's Lacrosse Drops High-Scoring Affair at No. 15 Denver, 18-12

DENVER, CO - Sophomore Katherine Sampson set a career-high with four goals and five points, but the George Washington women's lacrosse team allowed No. 15 Denver to pull-away in the final nine minutes of an 18-12 loss to the Pioneers in Denver, CO, on Tuesday.
GW (1-2) closed a five-goal Denver lead to one goal with 9:53 remaining, but surrendered six consecutive goals in the waning minutes to begin its Spring Break trip with a loss and fall to 1-2 all-time against the Pioneers.
Junior Kristin Karcsh and sophomore Meghan Cratty spotted GW an early 2-0 lead, while junior Lindsay Melvin made it 3-1 with 12:20 left in the first half. Denver (6-1) stormed back, scoring six of the games' next seven goals, including three by Kristie Leggio, to assume a 7-4 advantage.
Sampson scored late in the opening stanza and added another early in the second half to get the Colonials to within a goal at 7-6. The Pioneers rallied again, tallying the next four goals to stretch their lead to 11-6 with 23:43 left.
Sampson then jump-started a 5-1 run by GW with a goal just 20 seconds off the ensuing draw. Junior Hayley McDonough scored twice during the rally that narrowed the Colonials' deficit to 12-11 at the 9:53 mark. Denver's Ali Flury took over from there, netting a hat trick in less than five minutes to keep GW at bay. Flury finished with a game-high six goals, while Leggio chipped in five. Steph Coyne led all players with eight points on four goals and four assists.
Karcsh contributed three points and a team-high four ground balls, while Cratty, McDonough and senior Kristina Harvey each added two points. Junior Katelyn Honeyford caused a team-high three turnovers. Junior goalkeeper Caitlin Garman posted 11 saves in 60 minutes of action.

Karcsh moved into a tie for sixth on the program's career points list with 69.
