Baseball Scores A-10 Win With 4-2 Victory Over Rhode Island

ARLINGTON, VA - Centerfielder Charlie Kruer's (Old Bridge, NJ / Old Bridge) first inning three-run home run (4) proved to be the difference in George Washington University's (7-19, 1-5 A-10) 4-2 victory over the University of Rhode Island (14-6, 4-2 A-10) Sunday afternoon in the final game of a three-game Atlantic 10 Conference series at Barcroft Park.
Colonials' head coach Steve Mrowka used an inverted pitching strategy in the game, using a different relief pitcher in each of the first two innings before brining in reliever RHP Derek Haese (2-1) for 3.2 innings and then going to usual starter LHP Dan Pfau for the final 3.1 innings.
Haese allowed one run on one hit and did not walk a batter to earn the win. Pfau danced in and out of trouble in his third relief appearance of the year, allowing seven hits and four walks but just one run to pick up the save (2).
The Rams' offense seriously threatened in the eighth inning when, trailing 4-1, catcher Josh Nestor's RBI single cut their deficit to 4-2. URI then loaded the bases with one out before a strikeout and a fly out got GW out of the jam.
Third baseman Shaun Hagey doubled in the inning and collected four hits in the game.
The Colonials scored their fourth run of the day in the third inning after left fielder Chris Marsicano (Old Tappan, NJ / Bergen Catholic) was struck by a pitch with the bases loaded to make it a 4-0 contest.

Rams' starter James Norcott (2-2) gave up all four GW runs and was tagged for eight hits in 5.1 innings as he took the loss.
The win salvaged the three-game series for GW as the Rams won each of the first two meetings.
Colonials' catcher Andrew Abokhair (Ashburn, VA / Broad Run) went 2-for-4 in the game and batted .500 (6-for-12) for the series with two doubles and three RBI.
Nestor led the Rams with a .444 batting average (4-for-9) during the weekend.
GW's next contest is in Towson, MD, when it faces the Tigers on Tuesday at 3:00 PM.
The Colonials then welcome Delaware State University to Barcroft Park on Wednesday for a 3:00 PM game.
