CAMDEN, NJ -- The GW Women's Rowing team competed in the 2005 Knecht Cup regatta Saturday and Sunday at Camden, NJ. Both the Varsity and Freshmen Eight put in strong performances in finishing second in their respective grand final races. The GW women defeated three other A-10 crews and were seven seconds behind Massachusetts as they gear up for the Atlantic 10 Women's Rowing Championships next weekend.
Both GW boats finished second out of large fields of at least 18 boats each. The GW freshmen defeated four other A-10 freshman boats at the Knecht Cup and finished just one second behind Princeton. Weather conditions both days were sunny. Saturday, the crews rowed into a strong headwind, while on Sunday the boats enjoyed a moderate tailwind.
"There were several A-10 schools there so it gave us a good look at the competition for next weekend," GW head coach Helen Betancourt said. "We were second to UMass and hope to catch them next weekend."
The women next compete in the Atlantic 10 Women's Rowing Championships on Saturday, April 23 at Camden, NJ.
