Patriots Fall One Point Short at Women's CAA Track Championship

April 17, 2004

Richmond, Va. - The George Mason women's track and field team was looking to snap a six-year drought at the Colonial Athletic Association Championship and in the process, break William & Mary's three-year stranglehold on the conference title. In the end, the Patriots came up short by the narrowest of margins, as William & Mary successfully defended its title, defeating the Patriots, 196-195. Finishing third was UNC Wilmington with 121 points.

The Patriots got some sterling performances over the two-day meet, none more standout than Alyce Williams'. The sophomore was named the Meet's Outstanding Performer after scoring 34 individual points and taking part in a pair of first-place relay teams.

Williams won the triple jump easily, setting a new meet record with a leap of 13.15 meters. She also won the long jump, narrowly edging out her teammates with a leap of 5.63 meters. She was second in the 200-meters with a time of 25.21 seconds, finishing as runner-up to her sister, Alycia. She was third in the 100-meters in 12.11, finishing behind a pair of teammates. She also ran on the 4X100-meter relay team and the 4X400-meter relay team, which also set a new meet record.

The Patriots swept the top three in the long jump, 100-meters and 200-meters and had four of the top eight in the 400-meters and heptathlon. Kim Morgan didn't tally as many points as Alyce Williams, but she did her part. She on the 4X100-meter relay team, was second in the 100-meters, second in the heptathlon, third in the long jump and sixth in the 200-meters and 100-meter hurdles. It was her first time running the hurdle event in an official meet.

Alycia Williams won the 200-meters, was second in the 400-meters and was part of the 4X400-meter relay team. Sheena Davidson successfully defending her crown in the 400-meteres and she was second in the 400-meter hurdles and third in the 200-meters. She was also on the 4X400-meter relay team.

Shamekia Louis, like Morgan, had a busy meet. She was on the 4X100-meter relay team, was third in the heptathlon and sixth in the 100-meters. Corri Allen was second in the long jump, fourth in the triple jump, eighth in the 100-meters and was part of the 4X100-meter relay team. Aisha Williams was sixth in the long jump, sixth in the heptathlon, seventh in the 100-meter hurdles and eighth in the triple jump.

Alicia Lowery also won an individual title as the freshman took home the 100-meter crown. Sheena Goss also took went home a champion, successfully defending her 800-meter crown. Paula Bailey ran in three events and scored in each of them as she was fourth in the 400-meters, eighth in the 200-meters and was part of the 4X400-meter relay team. Also scoring for the Patriots were Dana Early, who was sixth in the 800-meters, Nichole Brown, who was fourth in the high jump, and Kathy Williams, who was seventh in the heptathlon.

While the Patriots may be smarting from the second-place finish, they will have several chances in the coming weeks to ease the pain. The prestigious Penn Relays are next weekend and then the Patriots host their lone outdoor meet of the season on May 1. The NCAA East Regional is in Gainesville, Fla. the final weekend in May, and any competitors that advance to the NCAA meet will travel to Austin, Texas in mid-June.
