Tennis Spilts With Drexel

April 1, 2005

Philadelphia, Pa. (April 1, 2005)--The Mason tennis teams split a pair of matches with conference rival Drexel, with the women defeating the Dragons 5-2, while the Mason men fell by the same score. The women improve to 5-8 on the season, 1-1 in the CAA, and the men drop to 0-4, 0-3 in the conference.

The men's team was short-handed, playing only five of the six singles matches and two of three doubles matches. The two points were won by Tim Bainton, winning in three sets after not winning a game in the first, 0-6, 6-2, 6-1; and Eric Vogel (No. 3) handily defeating Juaniza, 6-2, 6-1. The doubles matches were very competitive with the Dragons No. 1 team Tunjic/El Jobbari narrowly defeating the Mason team of Bainton/Dufils, 9-7. Mason won at the No. 2 doubles with Vogel/Hughes defeating Cardone/Wakhwan, 9-8 (9).

The Mason women won all three doubles matches handily and four of the six singles matches for the win. The top two singles matches were won by Patriots Maricel Ballester and Jenn Dektas. Ballester lost only one game in the two sets, 6-1, 6-0 and Dektas lost only two games, 6-2, 6-0. Katie Sloper and Julia Moscato won their matches at the No. 4 and 5 spots, respectively. Freshman Bridget Borley saw action at the No. 6 position, but lost in three sets, 6-3, 1-6, 6-10.

The Patriots return to action on Tuesday, April 5 with the women hosting Mount St. Mary's and the men travelling to UMBC.
