Softball Splits with Delaware

April 28, 2007

Box Score

Newark, Del.--George Mason University's softball team (16-33, 2-15 CAA) split with Delaware (15-22-2, 6-10) earlier this afternoon in a Colonial Athletic Association doubleheader at Delaware Field. The Blue Hens won the first game by a score of 2-0, while the Patriots claimed a 6-3 victory in the second contest.

In the second game, the Patriots scored three runs in the first inning. Sophomore Ali Bryan led things off with a double to left center and scored after freshman Becky Anderson connected on a single to first base to earn an RBI. Junior Kristin Dickel followed Anderson with a sacrifice fly, which scored junior Mandy Bach, while junior Lesley Hassen was next in the line-up and smacked a single through the right side, which sent Anderson across home plate.

Sophomore Kelsey Mack, who had a 3-for-4 showing at the plate for the Patriots, started off the third inning with a single through the left side and scored after Hassen hit a sacrifice fly to center field for her second RBI of the game. Delaware responded in the same inning with two runs to put the score at 4-2 in favor of the Patriots.

Sophomore Dee Murray collected a hit in the fourth as she singled to right field and advanced to third after Bryan smacked her second double of the contest. Mack earned two RBI as she singled up the middle to score both Bach and Bryan to help solidify Mason's win over the Blue Hens.

Junior Arielle Weinkofsky improved her record in the circle to 5-12 on the year as she gave up three runs, one earned, off of seven hits in 5.1 innings of work. Anderson earned her first save of the season as she allowed only two hits and struck-out one of the eight batters she faced in 1.2 innings. Samantha Shawn started things off for UD and gave up three runs, off of four hits, while walking one of the seven batters she faced.

In the first game, Mack is the only Mason player to have collected a hit as she had a 2-for-3 showing in the two-run loss. UD scored both of its runs in the bottom of the second, both of which were earned. Anderson earned the loss (6-15) as she pitched the entire game for the Patriots and allowed seven hits and two runs scored, while striking out five of the 26 batters. Carolynn Sloat earned the win for the Blue Hens as she only allowed two hits, while striking out five in seven innings of work.

Mason and UD will wrap-up the three-game series on April 29 in Newark at 12 p.m.
