Late Penalty Kick Lifts Tribe over Patriots, 1-0

Oct. 5, 2002

Williamsburg, VA ... William and Mary sophomore Taline Tahmassian connected on a penalty kick in the 89th minute to give the Tribe a hard-fought 1-0 win over George Mason in a Colonial Athletic Association women's soccer game Saturday night at Busch Field in Williamsburg, VA.

William & Mary improved to 6-4-1 overall, 2-0 in the CAA, while George Mason lost its second straight game to fall to 3-8 overall, 1-2 in the CAA.

The teams played scoreless through the first 88 minutes before the referee called a foul on the Patriots against Tahmassian in the penalty area. Tahmassian stepped to the six-yard spot and beat Patriot sophomore goalkeeper Sarah Coughlin with a shot to the lower-right corner of the net for her fourth goal of the year.

Coughlin started and played the entire match in goal, recording three saves for the Patriots. Nikki Villott had two saves for the Tribe, which held an 11-5 advantage in shots.

George Mason returns to George Mason Stadium for its next two games, hosting CAA foes Towson on Friday at 7 p.m. and Delaware on Sunday at 4 p.m.
