Phillips Leads Men at Patriot Games

FAIRFAX, VA ... George Mason freshman Alyce Williams (Palm Coast, FL/Flagler Palm Coast) won the women's triple jump with a personal-best 43-foot, ¼-inch performance to set a new indoor school record and provisionally qualify for the NCAA Indoor Track & Field Championships at the Patriots Games at the George Mason Fieldhouse on Saturday afternoon.

Just 1½ inches off the automatically qualifying NCAA mark, Williams is the first Patriot to post an NCAA-qualifying performance this indoor season.

Other competitors to record NCAA provisionally qualifying marks were NC State's Kelly Smoke winning the women's weight throw with a 61-foot, 5½-inch performance and William & Mary's Ali Henderson winning the women's 3000 meters in 9:30.46. St. Augustine's had NCAA Division II automatic qualifiers in two events - Anwar Moore winning the men's 60-meter hurdles in 7.90 seconds and their men's "A" team in the 4x400-meter relay, winning in 3:12.69.

Sophomore transfer Richard Phillips (St. Catherine, Jamaica/Ardenne/Abilene Christian) led George Mason's men's team, placing second in the 60-meter hurdles in a season-best 7.99 seconds, just .04 seconds off the NCAA provisionally qualifying time. Junior Wayne Wright (Roanoke, VA/Cave Spring) was runner-up in the high jump with a leap of 6 feet, 8 inches.

Other Patriots to post winning performances included sophomore Tysha Colon (Washington, DC/HD Woodson) recording a season-best time of 24.60 seconds to win the 200 meters, freshman Alycia Williams (Palm Coast, FL/Flagler Palm Coast) with a season-best 55.13-second performance to win the 400 meters and the women's distance medley relay of junior Dana Early (Milmont Park, PA/Ridley), sophomore Kathy Williams (Lanham, MD/Eleanor Roosevelt), sophomore Sheena Davidson (Rochester, NY/Edison Tech) and senior Michelle DiPenti (Warren, PA/Warren Area) in 12:28.34.

George Mason's 4x400-meter relays were also successful, with the women's "A" team of Alyce Williams, Alycia Williams, junior Sheena Goss (Elk Grove, CA/Laguna Creek) and sophomore Sheena Davidson (Rochester, NY/Edison Tech) finishing second in a season-best 3:46.27. The women's "B" team of Kathy Williams, sophomore Paula Bailey (Winston Salem, NC/West Forsyth), Colon and senior NamTasha Joyner (Richmond, VA/John F. Kennedy) followed in third place in 3:59.95. The men's 4x4 of Phillips, sophomore Dominique Brown (Somerville, NJ/Somerville), junior Ricardo Cunningham (Clarendon, Jamaica/SW Christian CC) and senior Kevin Nishiyama (Warrington, PA/Central Bucks East) placed third in 3:18.16.

George Mason's men's and women's track & field teams are off next weekend, but resume competition hosting the GMU Collegiate Open on Saturday, February 15.
