Patriots to End Homestand This Weekend

Oct. 13, 2004

Fairfax, Va.--George Mason University's men's soccer team's (6-5-1) six-game homestand comes to an end this weekend as the Patriots take a break from conference play to host a pair of Big South teams. Mason will face Liberty (5-7-1) on Oct. 15 at 7 p.m. and will then compete against Radford (4-3-3) on Oct 17 at 1 p.m. at George Mason Stadium.

The Patriots went 0-2 this past weekend as Mason dropped two Colonial Athletic Association games, which included a 1-0 decision to UNC Wilmington at home on Oct. 8 and Virginia Commonwealth went on to claim a 1-0 victory over the Patriots two days later. Junior forward Teba McKnight (Couva, Trinidad) is currently first in the league in game-winning goals (3), third in points (19), fourth in goals (7) and is tied for fourth in assists (5). Senior midfielder Damien Quinn (San Diego, Calif.) is tied for second in assists among his conference peers with six, while senior goalkeeper John O'Hara (Foxford, Ireland) is tied for first in shut-outs with five.

Liberty fell to No. 17 Virginia last Wednesday by a score of 3-0 and the Flames were then defeated by Winthrop, 7-5, on Oct. 9. Freshman midfielder Kyle Cupid leads LU in scoring with 15 points and six goals, which included two goals against Winthrop. Junior midfielder Darryl Roberts scored his 30th career goal last week, good for a tie for fourth all-time in school history and he is also now fourth all-time with 76 career points. Junior goalkeeper Kevin Mahan had a season-high seven saves at No. 17 Virginia last Wednesday.

Radford posted back-to-back Big South wins last weekend, the first time this season RU has won consecutive games and the Highlanders have now won three of their last four. Radford defeated Coastal Carolina by a score of 2-1 on Oct. 6 and shut-out High Point, 1-0, this past Saturday. The win over Coastal was RU's first victory over the Chants since a 4-3 overtime win in 2000. The Highlanders face Winthrop this evening which will be the final in a three-game conference homestand for RU.
