George Mason Defeats Rival James Madison, 74-70

FAIRFAX, Va. - The George Mason Patriots (12-4, 5-2 CAA) scored 46 of their 74 total points in the second half to defeat Colonial Athletic Association arch-rival James Madison (4-12, 1-7 CAA) 74-70 before 7,106 fans at the Patriot Center. Patriots Mark Davis (Springfield/VA/Robert E. Lee) led all scorers with 20 points, including 9-of-11 from the charity stripe. He scored all but two of his points in the second half. Center Jai Lewis (Aberdeen/MD/Maine Central Institute) followed a career-high 21 point performance Wednesday at UNCW with 19 points on 8-of-10 field goals and a team-high seven boards against the Dukes.
 

 

James Madison scorched the nets from beyond the arc, shooting 11-of-23, including hitting 6-of-10 in the first half as they catapulted to a nine point half-time lead, 37-28. Forward Dwayne Broyles shot 7-of-10 from the field, including 5-of-7 from long range to lead James Madison with 19 points. Dukes Ray Barbosa added 16 points and a game-high eight boards.

George Mason jumped out to a 7-0 lead to start the game, James Madison then hit three straight three-pointers to cut the lead to 12-11. The Dukes took their first lead of the game, which included 12 lead changes, at 11:06 left in the first half, 18-16. JMU finished the half on a 7-0 run in the final 2:41.

JMU's biggest lead of the game was 12 points, starting the second-half with a three-pointer by Broyles and then at 19:17 left in the game at 42-30. The Patriots took their first lead of the second half at 9:33, after going on a 19-6 run to lead 49-48. The game saw 10 lead changes in the final 9:01 of the contest. Barbosa gave the Dukes their last lead at 1:54 left at 70-69. Jai Lewis hit a lay-up and the Patriots made 3-of-4 free throws down the stretch.

The Patriots go on the road for two CAA games, at Drexel on Monday, Jan. 26 at 7:00 p.m. and at Delaware on Wednesday, Jan. 28 at 7:30 p.m. The games will be broadcast on 1310 WDCT radio.
