Patriots Take Out Liberty, 8-3

LYNCHBURG, Va. - George Mason's Bruce Baldwin went 3-for-6 with three RBI to lead the Patriots' baseball team to an 8-3 victory over the Liberty Flames Tuesday afternoon at Worthington Stadium.

George Mason (7-7) jumped on top early by plating two runs in the top of the first inning when Kyle Barrett doubled to left field to bring in Chris Looze and Matt Cooksey for a 2-0 lead.

Liberty (6-10) cut the lead to one with a run in the bottom of the second inning when Chad Bryan singled to bring in Jeremiah Boles to make the score 2-1.

After the Patriots increased their lead to 4-1 with runs in the third and fifth innings, Liberty plated a run in the fifth and another in the sixth to cut the lead to 4-3. The run in the fifth was scored when Larry Wayne York singled up the middle to drive in Ryan Terrill. Daniel Bote scored on a wild pitch for the run in the sixth inning.

George Mason put the game away with three runs in the eighth inning and one more in the ninth to make the final score 8-3.

For Liberty, Doug Bechtold went 2-for-5 and Bote went 2-for-4. Phillip Thompson started the game and pitched 4.0 innings, giving up four runs on five hits to take the loss for the Flames.

For George Mason, Cooksey went 3-for-5 to go along with Baldwin's three-hit, three RBI performance. Eric Gibbons pitched 5.0 innings in relief, giving up just two runs on seven hits to pick up the win for the Patriots.

George Mason hosts UMBC Wednesday at 2:30 p.m. at Raymond H. "Hap" Spuhler Field.
