The Furman volleyball team is set to begin the 2006 Southern Conference Volleyball Championships to be held in Boone, N.C. this weekend. Furman, the second-seeded team in the tournament, enters the weekend with a 19-10 overall record, 15-3 in the conference action.
Furman is led by sophomore middle hitter Nicole Palazzo, who was named Southern Conference Player of the Month for September and October. She also leads the conference in both hitting percentage (.382) and total blocks (1.45 per game).
Junior Chibuzo Aguocha leads the Southern Conference in kills per game (4.53) and points per game (5.21). The outside hitter was named Southern Conference Player of the Week on August 28 and was named to the ECU Invitational All-Tournament Team and the UCF Classic All-Tournament Team.
Senior captain Whitney Purser became just the eighth player in Furman volleyball history to record 1,000 career kills and 1,000 career digs, after a career-high 27 dig performance against Appalachian State on October 7.
Furman begins play in the SoCon tournament on Friday as the Paladins take on the winner of the UNCG-The Citadel game at 4:30 p.m. at the Holmes Convocation Center. All matches in the 2006 Southern Conference Volleyball Championships will be shown on SoCon.tv as well as via live stats through Appalachian State's athletic website.
