Furman women's tennis head coach Debbie Southern picked up her 300th career victory as the Lady Paladins shut out Old Dominion 7-0 Saturday afternoon at the J.W. Isenhour Tennis Complex in Raleigh, NC. With the win Furman improved to 12-3, dropping the Lady Monarchs to 10-11.
Furman jumped out to the early 1-0 lead capturing the first two doubles matches and winning the third by default. The Lady Paladins headed into singles play with a 2-0 lead after picking up a default win at the No.6 singles slot. Needing only two victories to seal the win, the Lady Paladins responded, quickly winning matches in flights four and five. At No.4 Jacqueline Eckert downed Barbara Kerner 6-1, 6-0 and in flight five Marti Morris ousted Linda Garder 6-3, 6-2. Furman then went on to win the last three matches in third set tie breakers after splitting the first two sets. At No.1 Mary Neill Hagood defeated Kerstin Endlich 6-2, 6-7(5), 10-8 and Caroline Bentley downed Barbara Costa 4-6, 6-2, 10-3. In the flight three match Shannon Moore won 6-7(4), 6-4, 10-7 over Fernanda Luiz to make the final score 7-0.
The Lady Paladins return to action on Sunday taking on NC State in Raleigh, NC at noon.
