Spartanburg, S.C. -
The Furman women's tennis team shutout its third consecutive Southern Conference opponent, posting a 7-0 win at Wofford on Wednesday afternoon. The Lady Paladins (6-8, 3-0) have never lost to Wofford, holding an all-time mark of 16-0 against the local conference foe. The Terriers (3-7, 1-3) are currently competing short-handed and are forced to forfeit a doubles and singles match due to lack of players.
Sophomore Laura Gioia and Natasa Manojlovic improved to 10-4 this spring with an 8-2 win over McKenzie Carson and Merry Ellen Henry. Terrier duo Adriane Hodges and Cayley Wetzig posted Wofford's only win of the afternoon with an 8-3 victory over Furman's Jacqueline Eckert and Lauren Tomory. Because of the forfeit at flight three doubles, Furman entered singles play with a 1-0 advantage.
Furman's top two singles players lost only two total games between them. Gioia posted a 6-1, 6-0 win over Henry at number one, and senior Bonnie Baird earned a 6-0, 6-1 victory over Hodges at position two. Gioia is 12-2 overall and 3-0 in league action. Sophomore Lauren Tomory dropped her first game of the SoCon season with a 6-0, 6-1 defeat of McKenzie Carson at number four. Prior to today, Tomory had shutout her other two conference opponents.
The Lady Paladins will remain on the road to face the Charlotte 49ers tomorrow afternoon at 2 p.m.
