Box Score
Jessica Lyness' RBI single in the top of the ninth snapped a scorless tie as the College of Charleston exploded for three runs in the frame to edge Furman 3-0 in Southern Conference softball action Saturday at Pepsi Stadium.
Furman's Rachel Henley and CofC's Rachael Stern combined to toss eight scoreless innings before the Cougars struck for three runs against Henley in the final inning.
Jayme Durand led off the ninth with a base on balls and moved to second on Berni Martinez's single to center field. The runners each advanced a base on Shondra Schlichenmayer's sacrifice bunt to give the College of Charleston runners at second and third with one out.
After Darcy Johnson popped out, Lyness' single to center plated Durand and pinch hitter Erica Nabors delivered a two-run single two batters later to cap the scoring.
Stern earned the victory to improve to 24-8 on the season. The senior pitched nine shutout innings allowing only six hits and striking out six. Leshe Russell paced the Cougars (43-15, 13-3) with two hits.
Rachel Henley was once again the tough luck loser for Furman (12-40, 3-13) allowing only two earned runs on five hits over nine innings. Henley, now 8-21, struck out four batters and also collected two hits to lead the Lady Paladins' offensive attack.
The series opener was pushed back two hours due to early morning rains in Greenville. The second game of the series, originally scheduled as part of a Saturday doubleheader, will be played as part of a Sunday twinbill beginning at 11:00 a.m.
