Morrison Notches Hat Trick, Furman Downs The Citadel In SoCon Opener 9-0

Charleston, S.C. - Senior Andre'a Morrison tallied her fourth career hat trick and added an assist to help the Furman Lady Paladins to a 9-0 victory over The Citadel in its Southern Conference women's soccer opener Sunday afternoon at Summerall Field in Charleston, S.C.

Morrison put the Lady Paladins in the lead with and netted her third game-winning goal just 2:45 into the match on an assist from Anna Betton. At the 22 minute mark, Morrison found the back of the net again on an assist from Katie Tucker to up the lead to 2-0. Nicky Darling beat Citadel goalkeeper Brit Bunnell exactly one minute later with her sixth goal of the season to give Furman a comfortable 3-0 lead at the half.

The Lady Paladins opened the second half with a flurry of chances and tallied four goals in a four minute stretch. Morrison and sophmore Emily Krankowski fed Tucker for Furman's fourth goal of the match at 55:59. Just 11 seconds later Tucker passed the Maggie Welder who netted her first goal of the season to increase the lead to 5-0. Morrison completed her hat trick with her third goal of the afternoon at 58:29 and Gena Villari tallied the fourth Furman score in four minutes with an unassisted strike at 59:54.

Villari and Julie Einstein scored goals just 23 seconds apart at 75:40 and 76:03, respectively, on assists from Kaylan Pedine and Betton to cap the Furman scoring.

Senior Andie Hinshaw, who was forced to make just two saves, tallied her third shutout of the season and Lady Paladin record 28th career clean sheet. Bunnell tallied 11 first half saves for the Bulldogs while substitute Angie Ellenwood recorded two second half saves in goal.

Furman held a 32-3 edge in shots attempted and 4-0 advantage in corner kicks.

The multi-goal performance was the first of Gena Villari's career and Furman's nine goals were the most by a Lady Paladin squad since Furman downed Anderson 9-0 on September 6, 2004.

With the win, Furman improves to 6-4-0 overall and 1-0-0 in Southern Conference play. The Citadel drops to 2-6-0 overall and 0-1-0 in league play.

Furman continues SoCon play Thursday when it travels to face the College of Charleston Cougars in a 7 p.m. clash at Patriots Point in Mount Pleasant, S.C.
