Furman Blanks Chattanooga In Southern Conference Opener, 2-0

Chattanooga, Tenn. - The Furman Lady Paladins used second half goals from Rachel Fry and Anna Betton to snap a four-match losing streak and shutout Chattanooga 2-0 in Southern Conference women's soccer action Sunday afternoon at the North River Soccer Complex.

Fry, a sophomore, opened the scoring at the 65:37 mark. The Gambrills, Md., native beat Chattanooga goalkeeper Stacey Matthiessen on a one-versus-one situation to register her second goal of the season and give the Lady Paladins a 1-0 lead.

With just over five minutes remaining in regulation, junior Anna Betton put the game out of reach with her third goal of 2006. Betton received a pass from freshman Sara El-Shami and bested Matthiessen at 84:48 for the final 2-0 margin.

Furman held a 29-18 advantage in shots attempted and freshman goalkeeper Briana da Mota notched nine saves to combine with Jennifer Dobbs to record the clean sheet.

The victory improves Furman to 3-6-0 overall and 1-0-0 in SoCon play while Chattanooga falls to 3-5-1 overall and 0-2-0 in league play.

Furman returns to action Friday night when it visits Western Carolina for a 7 p.m. kickoff in Cullowhee, N.C.
