GREENVILLE, South Carolina -
Furman's Lady Paladin golf team fired a 307 in cold and windy conditions to win the Southern Conference Women's Golf Championship and NCAA Tournament bid with a three-round 904 total. In addition, sophomore Jenny Suh carded a final round 75 to finish at 220, winning her second individual colllegiate title by three strokes over Western Carolina's Ashley Hovda.
Furman entered the final round with a 24 stroke cushion, and fired the second lowest score of the day, one stroke behind Western Carolina's 306, to win by 33. Suh, meanwhile, had a five stroke advantage entering the competition's final round, and was able to hold on for a three-stroke victory when the 54-hole championship concluded at the 5,984-yard, par 72, Furman University Golf Course.
Hovda's 73, which was the low individual round of the day, keyed the Catamounts' 306 which moved them from fifth into fourth in the team standings. Elon's 316 allowed them to hold onto second place, three strokes ahead of the College of Charleston, who took third with a three-round 940. WCU was one stroke back at 941, while ETSU finished fifth at 946.
In the individual standings, ETSU's Ashley Barton recorded a third-place finish at 225, while Furman's Theresa Paik finished fourth at 226 and Elon's Krista Bulow wrapped up fifth with a 230 tally.
"It is always nice to come away with a victory," said coach Mic Potter. "And the Southern Conference is getting more and more competitive every year. We are looking forward to NCAA Regionals and our hope is to be an outstanding representative of the Southern Conference at the National Championship in Oregon next month."
Suh, who tied for the individual title at the 2004 championship before losing in a playoff to former teammate Sarah Johnston, was named Southern Conference Player of the Year. Maria Ringdahl of ETSU earned Freshman of the Year, while ETSU coach Stefanie Reynolds was selected as league Coach of the Year.
The all-conference first team consisted of Suh and Monique Gesualdi of Furman, Morgan Olds of Elon, and Ashley Barton and Ringdahl from ETSU. The second team featured Furman players Theresa Paik and Connor Atkinson, College of Charleston's Gretchen Zoeller and Angie Hill, and Western Carolina's Ashley Hovda.
The 2005 Southern Conference Championship title is the 11th for the Furman women's golf program. This will be the Lady Paladins' 13th appearance in the NCAA Regional Championships.
