Furman freshman Brian Martin tallied two goals to lead the Paladins to a 2-1 victory over Cornell on the final day of the Wofford/adidas Invitational Sunday afternoon at Snyder Field in Spartanburg, S.C.
Martin broke a 0-0 tie at the 41:34 mark with is second career goal on an assist from sophomore Dominic Cianciarulo. Less than two minutes later, at 43:21, senior Rhett Abraham's pass found Martin who beat Cornell keeper Steve Lesser with the eventual game-winning goal.
Pape Seye slotted a shot past Paladin goalkeeper Bryan Amos in the 59th minute to trim the lead to 2-1, but the Furman defense preserved the Paladins' second straight win by holding Cornell scoreless over the final 32 minutes.
Amos tallied two saves to earn the win in goal while Lesser notched four stops in the loss for Cornell. Furman held a 15-8 edge in shots and each team attemped four corner kicks.
Furman returns to action next Saturday when it hosts Elon in the Paladins' Southern Conference opener. Kickoff is scheduled for 7 p.m. at Stone Soccer Stadium.
