The Pacers of USC-Aiken carded a second-round 279 to set a new two-round record in the 36th year of the Furman Intercollegiate, and to take an 11-stroke lead over the field entering the third and final round on Sunday. USCA has a two-day 564 total, a mark that is two strokes better than the 10-under record set by the 1986 Furman team.

Dane Burkhart carded an even-par 36 on Furman's backside, after teeing off on hole No. 10 to start the day. Burkhart then birdied holes two through five, eagled the par five six, and birdied seven for a frontside 29 and 65 on the day. In all, he totaled six birdies, one eagle, and one bogey at the par 72, 6,800-yard Furman University Golf Course. His teammate Scott Brown carded a second consecutive 68 and the pair is tied for the individual lead at 136, entering tomorrow's final 18.

Wofford College's Daniel Sloan is in third place, three-strokes off the lead at 139, after carding a 68 on Saturday, while Matt Cook of Western Carolina sits in fourth at 140. Furman's top performer has been Greenwood native Thomas Self, who fired 70-73, and is tied for 11th at one-under for the tournament.

The Paladin "B" squad moved ahead of Furman's "A" team today, carding a 290 for seventh place, and a two-day 587. The "A" team is in ninth, tied with Elon at 589. In addition to Self's 73, the "B" team was paced by Ben Goforth, who shot 70, and Jay McKnight, who carded a 72. Furman's "A" team was paced on the day by senior Rob Langley, who is tied for 14th at 144 after Saturday's 74. Ryan Potter added a 75, while T.J. Blandford and Robert Jamieson each fired 76. Chris Gilliland, who was in second place after the first round, recorded a 78 and slid into a tie for 19th.

The 49ers of Charlotte are 11 strokes behind USC-Aiken at 575, while Coastal Carolina is third at 577, UNC Greensboro and Virginia Tech are tied for fourth at 583, and Charleston Southern is sixth at 586.

Sunday's round, originally scheduled for a 7:45 a.m. start, has been moved to an 8:45 a.m. shotgun due to forecast bad weather. There will be an Easter Service at the Betty Ellison Pavilion at 7 a.m.

If they hold on for the win USC-Aiken, the defending Division II National Champions, will be the first Division II team to win the Furman Intercollegiate.
