GREENVILLE, S.C. -- Former Furman All-America pitcher Tom Mastny earned the first win of his major league career in the Cleveland Indians' 6-4 victory over the Tampa Bay Devil Rays Sunday afternoon.
Mastny entered the game in the eighth inning with the Indians trailing 4-2 and pitched 2/3 of an inning, allowing a hit while also recording a strikeout. Cleveland then rallied for four runs in the top of the ninth to take a 6-4 lead, and the Indians' Joe Borowski came on close out the Devil Rays in their half of the ninth to seal the victory.
Mastny is now 1-0 on the season for Cleveland. In six appearances this season, he's worked 6 1/3 innings and allowed four hits, two runs, both earned, and one walk while recording six strikeouts. He currently sports a 2.84 earned run average.
A year ago the former 2003 Paladin All-American made 15 appearances and converted his first five save opportunities after getting a July call up to the Indians.
The Zionsville, Ind., native was tabbed 2003 Southern Conference Pitcher-of-the-Year and became the Paladins' first All-American after going 11-2 with an NCAA best 1.09 ERA while helping Furman to a school season record 32 wins, including victories over North Carolina State, South Carolina, and pair of triumphs over Clemson.
Following graduation, he became the second highest draft selection in Furman history when he was picked in the 11th round by the Toronto Blue Jays. He was traded by the Blue Jays to Cleveland in December of 2004.
