Box Score
DAVIDSON, N.C.--Furman scored seven runs in the last four innings Saturday to take its second game of the three-game set, 11-7. The Paladins improve to 25-27 overall and 12-16 in the Southern Conference while the Wildcats fall to
26-23 and 13-16.
Both starting pitchers cruised through the first four innings with Davidson
starter Rob Wilson (5-6) giving up the only run in the top of the fourth.
However, things began to sour for the Wildcats in the fifth. A lead-off
double by A.J. Davidiuk and a walk to Joe Daysh, Friday¹s hero for the
Paladins, put Furman runners on first and third with one out. Nick Wajda
pushed Davidiuk across with a sacrifice fly to right field before Ben Terry
reached on a fielding error. Andrew Green made the ¹Cats pay for the mistake
with a double down the right field line to plate two more Paladins and give
Furman a 4-0 cushion.
After being held to only one hit through four innings, Davidson responded in
grand fashion by tallying five runs in the bottom of the fifth, all with two
outs. Junior Alex Entrekin began the inning with a single to left and
eventually scored Davidson¹s first run on a wild pitch. Fellow junior Ronnie
Shore kept the ball rolling with a two-run single through the left side.
Three more singles by junior Jay Heafner, sophomore Gregory Zage and senior
Eli Benefield helped put Davidson ahead, 5-4.
Davidson¹s lead was short lived as the Paladins notched three more runs in
both the sixth and seventh innings to take control of the contest. A pair of
throwing errors by Benefield in the sixth led to two more unearned runs for
Furman. In the seventh, the Paladins plated their runs on a wild pitch, a
Tony Maccani RBI single and successful double steal.
.
Paladin hurler Ryan Hudson (3-3) picked up the victory by going 3.1 innings
of relief, yielding just two hits and one earned run.
Greene and Maccani led the offense charge for Furman Saturday as each player
produced two hits and two RBIs.
Davidson and Furman will conclude their series tomorrow, May 22, at Wilson
Field with the first pitch slated for 1 p.m.
