April 28, 2007

BALTIMORE - Swarthmore ousted the Franklin & Marshall women's tennis team from the Centennial Conference Championships during Saturday's semifinal round at Johns Hopkins. The Garnet posted a 5-1 win, sweeping the three doubles matches, and wrapping the victory with wins at second and third singles.

Sonya Reynolds and Sara Sargent, ranked sixth in the region, defeated the region's 32nd ranked duo, Katie Gaskins and Barbara Bee 8-1. Swarthmore also took second doubles 8-1, and won 8-2 in the third spot.

Marissa Matthews defeated the Diplomats Erica Wood 6-1, 6-0 at third singles, putting F&M on the brink of elimination. When the second singles match wrapped up shortly thereafter, F&M was ousted from the field via #16 Rachel Wallwork's 6-0, 6-0 win over Bee.

The other four matches were not played to completion once the outcome was determined.

With the loss, Franklin & Marshall concludes its season at 11-5. Swarthmore improves to 12-5, and advances to Sunday's final against Johns Hopkins in Baltimore.
