Derek Hines Named Jostens Trophy Finalist

Feb. 21, 2007

LANCASTER, Pa. - Franklin & Marshall junior forward Derek Hines has been named a finalist for the coveted Jostens Trophy.

The award honors the Division III Men's and Women's Basketball Outstanding Athletes of the Year. Recipients of the Jostens Trophy must exhibit excellence in basketball, academics and community service. Designed and sponsored by Jostens and the Rotary Club of Salem, Virginia, the 64-pound trophy stands nearly two feet tall and features an eight-inch crystal basketball.

The recipients will be announced in conjunction with the Division III Men's Championship Tournament in March. The Rotary Club of Salem, through its Wooldridge Scholarship Fund, will award $1000 to the scholarship fund of the recipient's institution in his/her name.

Hines averaged 13.1 points and 6.8 rebounds per night this past winter, finishing the season with 328 points and 170 rebounds. He was the only player on the Diplomats' roster to start all 25 games.

Off of the court, Hines majors in Government and Spanish, maintaining an outstanding Grade Point Average and has been named to the Dean's List on several occasions. Hines is also John A. Marshall Pre-Law Scholar.

Active in his community, the Diplomats' hometown product has done extensive volunteer work in and around Lancaster. He has volunteered at the Domestic Violence Legal Clinic of Lancaster, the YMCA, and as an assistant basketball coach for Manheim Township Boys Basketball for fifth and sixth graders. He also taught Sunday school at St. Thomas Episcopal Church for four years.
