Mike Galanka begins his twenty-seoncd year with the Fordham track & field program. The former high school coach and Rams football assistant has guided the field events squad to numerous victories at the indoor and outdoor CTC Championships, as well as at the Atlantic 10 and Metropolitan Championships. Under his direction, the school records in the high jump, triple jump and weight throw for both indoor and outdoor seasons have been broken consistently. Last year, Matt DiBuono successfully defended his Atlantic 10 hammer throw title while also earning Second Team All-Conference honors in the weight throw. In 1996-97, Galanka coached Barry Cantrell to high jump titles at the Indoor and Outdoor Metropolitan Championships, Indoor and Outdoor Atlantic 10 Championships, and Indoor IC4A's. Cantrell went on to earn All-America honors at the 1998 NCAA Indoor Championship. In 1995-96, Galanka coached Cantrell to titles at the Indoor and Outdoor Metropolitans, Indoor and Outdoor Atlantic 10's, and Indoor and Outdoor IC4A's, attaining school records during both seasons. A noted decathlon expert, he has also coached many individuals to decathlon gold medals at the Empire State Games. Last year, Matt Spaccarelli placed third in the decathlon at the Atlantic 10 Outdoor Championships. Galanka was the 1996-97 recipient of Fordham's Jack Coffey Award for outstanding contributions to Fordham Athletics and received a special award from the IC4A Coaches Association prior to the Outdoor Championships in 2004 for 25 years of service to track and field. |
