Volleyball Finishes Season in Five-Game Loss to GSU

Nov. 22, 2002

Final Stats

In a marathon match between no. 2 Georgia State University and no. 3 Florida Atlantic University, the Panthers pulled out a semifinal win at the Atlantic Sun Conference Tournament 30-32, 40-38, 30-19, 30-20, 17-15. Giovana Milaneze had her second career match of the day as she collected 25 digs.

Despite being out-hit and out-dug in game one, FAU (14-17) took advantage of six service aces to edge out the Panthers (15-13). Jeana Boyle and Jessica Kahn combined for the second game winning block of the A-Sun Tournament to close out game one and the first of three extra point contests.

In the highest scoring game in A-Sun Tournament history, FAU won 40-38 win in an extended game two. With 21 ties the Owls finally closed out the game for a 2-0 lead when Iana Andonova tipped the ball over the middle on a front one.

Florida Atlantic seemed to run out of gas in the third and fourth games and in the first part of the fifth game before Lindsey Bell entered the match to give the Owls fresh legs. Georgia State led by four at 10-6 before FAU's aggressive hitting managed to tie the game at 11. The teams traded points until 15. A serving error by the Owls and a kill by freshman Robyn Van Dam sealed the win for the Panthers.

The two teams combined for 34 blocks, 145 kills and 202 digs. With the win, Georgia State advances to the finals and will face UCF on Saturday at 1 pm.
